Dr. Barbara Hurst
DVM — Veterinarian
Dr. Barbara Hurst is an associate veterinarian who joined our hospital in 2022. Dr. Hurst grew up in Weston, WV, where she still resides with her husband and children. Growing up, she always loved animals. She decided to combine her love of medicine, animals, and people into a career by becoming a veterinarian. She attended Alderson Broaddus College, where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology in 2006. Dr. Hurst received her degree in veterinary medicine in 2011 from the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine in Knoxville. After years of serving our state as a small animal veterinarian and veterinary technology instructor, she began doing relief work for our hospital in 2022. She became a full-time veterinarian at our hospital in 2023.
Dr. Hurst has a special interest in preventative medicine as well as animal behavior and dermatology. In her spare time, she loves traveling, spending time with her family, camping, and playing with her two dogs, Papi and Annie.
Dr. Sofia Sansalone
DVM — Veterinarian
Dr. Sansalone earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Mississippi State University. Prior to becoming a veterinarian, she gained experience in small animal medicine as a veterinary assistant and veterinary technician, and completed an internship at the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden. She is Fear Free Certified, reflecting her commitment to helping pets feel calmer and more comfortable during veterinary visits.
Dr. Sansalone’s passion for veterinary medicine began with a lifelong love of animals and was shaped by growing up in Appalachia, where she witnessed the important role pets play in their families and communities. She strives to ensure every client feels heard, supported, and confident in the decisions made for their pet’s care.
Outside of work, she enjoys building meaningful connections and celebrating life’s special moments with family and friends.
